It’s tree planting season, and volunteers from The Maker’s Place ‘Grow Together’ garden have been out planting apple trees thanks to a donation from family cider maker Thatchers. The apple trees have been donated to The Maker’s Place CIC as part of Thatchers Community Orchard Project, which, as part of its 2025 apple tree planting season, is helping community groups, schools and charities across the UK plant more trees this spring.
The ground was too wet to plant when the trees arrived so we heeled the trees in. Yesterday, Monday 10th March after a dry period the ground was just right for planting, so our 'Grow Together' gardening group spent the morning planting the trees. It was a fun and productive morning with some wonderful team work.
The opportunity to add a small apple orchard to The Maker’s Place garden is amazing, particularly as this site used to be an orchard years ago! The orchard will provide apples for the gardening group to enjoy and take home, however we could also look at juicing if we get heavy crops. It will be good for those who want to learn about pruning apple trees. The orchard will have a beautiful view and we intend to add seating so it can be a tranquil place to simply ‘be’.
Big thanks to Thatchers Community Orchard Project and to the wonderful people who come to Grow Together for creating this special space.
On another note, the poly tunnel is almost erect—woohoo! Watch this space...
